The principle of viscosupplementation

In an osteoarthritic joint, the synovial fluid loses its viscosity and lubricating power. Intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid aims to restore these mechanical properties, improve mobility, and reduce pain. The knee remains the main indication, but the hip, shoulder, ankle, and small joints are also concerned.

Single injection or multi-session protocol

The products mainly differ in their concentration, molecular weight, and whether they are cross-linked or not. Some are formulated for a single injection, others for a protocol spread over several weeks. The choice depends on the stage of osteoarthritis, the joint treated, and the prescriber's practice.
