The critical window

The final quality of a scar is largely determined in the first few weeks. Early management—starting as soon as the epidermis is fully closed—limits the risk of hypertrophic scarring and significantly improves the one-year outcome. Waiting until the scar is established greatly reduces the available options.

Silicone gel

This is the best-documented topical treatment for hypertrophic scars. It works by occluding and hydrating the stratum corneum, which modulates fibroblast activity. Its effectiveness depends entirely on consistent application over several months—a point to clearly discuss with the patient from the outset.

Hyaluronic acid in healing

Beyond aesthetics, topical hyaluronic acid maintains a moist environment favorable to cell migration. This is the principle behind Ialuset dressings, used on wounds and areas undergoing epithelialization.

And sun protection

A young scar exposed to the sun will develop lasting pigmentation. Photoprotection is an integral part of the scar care protocol, for at least one year.
