Orthovisc is an injectable viscosupplement based on high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA), developed by Anika Therapeutics. It is an ultra-pure, non-animal viscosupplement composed of highly purified sodium hyaluronate (NaHA), both biocompatible and resorbable, containing a high concentration of HA at 15 mg/ml.

Indications

Orthovisc is indicated as a viscoelastic supplement or replacement for synovial fluid in human joints, particularly suited for treating symptoms of synovial joint dysfunctions such as osteoarthritis.

Mode of Action

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in synovial fluid, providing essential lubrication and shock absorption within the joint. In osteoarthritis, the quality and quantity of natural HA decrease, causing pain and stiffness. Orthovisc compensates for this loss by restoring the viscoelastic properties of synovial fluid, thereby reducing friction and improving joint function.

Composition

• Sodium hyaluronate (NaHA): 15 mg/ml — high molecular weight, bacterial origin (biofermentation)
• Sterile physiological saline solution
• Non-animal — no risk of transmission of animal diseases
• Non-inflammatory and non-pyrogenic

Treatment Protocol

The recommended protocol is 3 injections spaced one week apart. Do not exceed one treatment cycle per joint within a 6-month period.
